Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services (DHS) provides care and support to the state’s most vulnerable individuals and families. The Department’s Office of Children Youth and Families (OCYF) serves children and families through a child support enforcement program, oversees adoption and foster care services, and works with counties on child abuse prevention and juvenile justice issues. As part of this mission, DHS supports child abuse recognition and reporting training through delivery methods such as web-based training.

Simple Learning Systems (Simple) created two Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting courses approved by Pennsylvania’s DHS, which are now available on the Mandated Reporter Training platform. These courses were specifically developed to meet Pennsylvania’s legislative requirements and curriculum guidelines. They have also been approved for Continuing Education (CE) credit for health-related licensees in the state.

Mandated reporter training provides the knowledge and skills to help professionals carry out their responsibilities to identify and report suspected cases of child abuse.

The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) is Federal legislation enacted in 1974 to protect children from abuse. Under this legislation, each state has its own guidelines and laws regarding who needs to train and report and penalties for failing to do so. For example, Pennsylvania’s Act 31 of 2014 requires persons applying to issue an initial license or certificate from any health-related board to complete 3 hours of approved Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting training.

Tailored Courseware to Facilitate Licensure & Continuing Education Credits

Health-related licensees and funeral directors in Pennsylvania must complete continuing education approved by the state’s Department of Human Services. These professionals are required to complete 3 hours of training to obtain an initial license or certificate and a further 2 hours of training to renew a license.

Mandated Reporter Training crafted tailored courseware to meet these requirements, offering a solution to Pennsylvania’s unique requirements. A 3-hour course is available to meet the initial licensing requirements. When it comes time to renew, Pennsylvania’s mandated reporters can take a 2-hour course to refresh their knowledge with a more streamlined learning experience.

These courses are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of State’s Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs for Continuing Education (CE) Credit for Professional Licensure or Certification. (Provider number CACE000100.)

Interactive, Engaging Content

Courseware for the State of Pennsylvania has been developed to provide an engaging, instructive experience for learners. This was achieved by implementing quiz questions and sample scenarios throughout the course to ensure that all key takeaways are understood and communicated clearly to the learner.

The course also includes an engaging, interactive Learning Discussion offering an opportunity to reflect on course material. The Learning Discussion module presents reporters with example scenarios to test their understanding of the appropriate course of action. Each scenario was developed to suit Pennsylvania’s laws and regulations surrounding mandated reporting, ensuring that the state’s reporters finish the course with a complete understanding of their duties. These scenarios engage reporters and elicit critical thinking to ensure a thorough achievement of key learning objectives.

The Mandated Reporter Training platform offers state-approved courseware to allow Pennsylvania’s mandated reporters to complete their Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting training and earn CE credits in one simplified, effective learning experience.
