When Does Mandated Reporter Training Expire?

Here is a state-by-state guide to help you determine when your mandated reporter training expires and how often you may have to retake your training course. Note: training requirements may change depending on state and local legislation or industry/ licensing requirements — this information is subject to change.

California

California legislation requires daycare providers, teachers, and other school personnel to renew their mandated reporter training regularly.

CA Teachers and School Personnel: Annual Renewal

School personnel, including teachers, teacher’s aides, administrators, and employees of public or private schools, are required to undergo annual reporter training under CA AB 1432. Under the law, school personnel must submit proof of completion (certificate of completion) to the applicable governing board, school district, or office of education each year.

CA Daycare Providers: Renew Every Two Years

Under CA mandated reporting law, a person who becomes a licensee, administrator, or employee of a licensed child daycare facility must complete mandated reporter training in order to obtain their license or within the first 90 days of their employment. Any daycare licensee, administrator, or employee must also renew mandated reporter training every 2 years following the date on which that person completed the initial mandated reporter training.

Licensed childcare providers must collect proof of completion (certificate of completion) from their employees and administrators and submit to the Department of Social Services, which is authorized to revoke a facility’s license for failing to confirm to these requirements.

Connecticut

In Connecticut, each school employee shall be required to complete the training program developed pursuant to § 17a-101(c). Each such school employee shall complete the refresher training program no later than 3 years after completion of the initial training program and shall thereafter retake the refresher training course at least once every 3 years.

Illinois

Under Illinois law, mandated reporters must complete mandated reporter training, including a section on implicit bias, at least every 3 years. Medical personnel who work with children in their professional or official capacity must complete mandated reporter training at least once every 6 years.

Iowa

How often do you have to renew mandated reporter training in Iowa? Under Iowa law, a person required to report, other than a physician whose professional practice does not regularly involve providing primary health care to children, shall complete at least 2 hours of additional child abuse identification and reporting training every 3 years.

Maine

Maine’s mandated reporting laws require a mandatory reporter to complete mandated reporter training approved by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services at least once every 4 years.

Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, employees of school entities and independent contractors of school entities must complete a minimum of three (3) hours of mandated reporter training every five (5) years. This includes employees of any public school, charter school, cyber charter school, private school, nonpublic school, intermediate unit or area vocational-technical school.

In addition, PA requires that all professional licensing boards whose licensees are considered mandated reporters to make mandated reporter training a condition for licensing and biennial (every two year) license renewal.

What Other States Require Training Renewal?

All other states and territories DO NOT currently require renewal training, but you still may be required to retrain depending on your employer’s compliance requirements. Check your state’s mandated reporter requirements and with your professional licensing boards to determine if you have a renewal requirement not listed here.
