<p>A Virginia bill expanding the persons required to report suspected child abuse and neglect was enacted in 2023. Find out who’s required to report in Virginia, how to make a report, and the penalties for failing to report.</p> <h2 id="who-is-required-to-report-child-abuse-in-virginia">Who is Required to Report Child Abuse in Virginia?</h2> <p>Virginia already had an extensive list of mandated reporters—persons required by law to identify and report suspected child abuse and neglect—before 2022. But <a href="https://legiscan.com/VA/text/HB751/2022">HB 751</a>, introduced in January 2022, added a new category of professionals to this list.</p>

How Organizations Can Respond to CA's New Mandated Reporter Law

<p>On January 1, 2021, <a href="https://mandatedreportertraining.com/blog/how-changes-to-california-mandated-reporter-law-impact-employers">new California legislation</a> will go into effect that makes human resources employees and some supervisors mandated reporters of child abuse. AB 1963 applies to companies that have more than 5 employees who employ minors. If one of your employees is a mandated reporter under this bill, your organization is required to provide them with training in their new duty.</p> <p>Previously, mandated reporters were primarily professionals working closely with young children – teachers, daycare workers, nurses, etc. Now, however, organizations across nearly every industry will need to become familiar with the ins and outs of mandated reporting.</p>

What California Businesses Need to Know About AB 1963

<p>As of January 1, 2021 employers throughout the state of California may be required to provide mandated reporter training to certain employees. This is due to <a href="https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200AB1963">Assembly Bill (AB) 1963</a>, which adds HR employees and supervisors at businesses with more than 5 employees that also employ teens to the state’s list of mandated reporters.</p> <p>AB 1963 requires that the employers of these new reporters provide the appropriate team members with mandated reporter training. That training must include information on how to identify and report child abuse and neglect.</p>

Currently, the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Law, originally adopted in 1980, identifies certain individuals as mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. It strongly encourages employers to provide their employees who are mandated reporters with training in these duties.</p>
